This must be a fabrication/excuse after the fact. Samus was made female as a joke + fanservice, the first game doesn't have any hint at you playing as a woman unless you manage to speedrun to the end in 2.5 hrs. Helmet is taken off if reaching the ending in 7.5 hrs but then it just be a guy with bushy hair.
